What is HAL?

An open archive is a platform for submitting full-text versions of scientific research and sharing it with open access.

HAL is a shared national open archive, managed by the Centre for Direct Scientific Communication (CCSD), a combined service unit of the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (Inria) and the University of Lyon.

Since 2011, the University has had a HAL open access portal: HAL-Rennes 1

Where to submit?

You are advised to submit your research work to the HAL-Rennes 1 institutional open access repository.

HAL-Rennes 1 is for submitting or searching scientific publications from University of Rennes 1 research units.

You can also submit your publications to a disciplinary HAL open access portal.

To be able to submit a publication, you need to set up a personal account.

What to submit?

What types of documents can be submitted?

Articles, papers as well as books or book chapters, posters etc. The full list is set out in the CCSD documentation: Types of publication accepted in HAL

Most documents submitted are publications. You can however submit unpublished documents (working papers, pre-prints, reports etc.).

Which article version can be submitted?

Submit the post-print version of your article, that is the accepted for publication post-refeering draft (generally in Word or LaTeX format) = published version content without publisher formatting.

You CANNOT submit the published version (PDF), formatted by the publisher, nor the proofs or templates. Some publishers do however authorise published PDFs to be submitted to HAL.

If you have published your article in open access, submit the published PDF to HAL.
